Suspension of Courtesy Ridership
It has been DPCDSB’s practice to provide students who are not eligible for student transportation with an opportunity to apply for courtesy seating each year if there are any remaining seats available on a school bus.
In a letter to the Directors of Education of the DPCDSB and the Peel District School Board (PDSB) on August 23, 2021, Peel Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Monica Hau advised that Peel Public Health does not recommend offering this service on school buses during the 2021-2022 school year, as this would increase the size of current bus transportation cohorts. It was noted that smaller bus transportation cohorts lowers the exposure risk for students and their bus drivers by decreasing the number of potentially infectious contacts and enabling more physical distancing between students.
In view of this recommendation from our regional public health authority, the DPCDSB will not be entertaining courtesy ridership requests for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year.
This action is consistent with other measures DPCDSB has taken to follow the guidance of our regional public health authorities.
Further review of courtesy ridership will be undertaken at a later date and will be subject to pandemic conditions at that time.
