Sharon Hobin re-elected chair of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board

Luz del Rosario, Mississauga Wards 6 & 11 trustee acclaimed as vice chair

At the annual Organizational meeting of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) held Tuesday, December 7, trustees elected Sharon Hobin, Mississauga Wards 2 & 8 trustee, as chair of the 11-member Board of Trustees.

Ms. Hobin is a dedicated supporter of Catholic education and has participated as a parent volunteer on numerous school councils and committees. She has been a long-time supporter and advocate for Catholic schools, parents, staff and most of all, students. Ms. Hobin has been a member of the Board of Trustees for 15 years, chair for three years (2018-2021), vice chair for two years (2009-2011) and has also served as chair and vice chair on various DPCDSB committees.

In her address to the Board of Trustees following her election, Sharon Hobin stated, "Dufferin-Peel has a long history of promoting Catholic education. We, as trustees, stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us." She added, "I would like to thank our students and parents/guardians. You are the foundation of DPCDSB and the reason we are here and why we work hard every day for Catholic Education."

Luz del Rosario, Mississauga Wards 6 & 11 trustee was acclaimed vice chair. Ms. del Rosario served as vice chair for one year (2020-21) and has also served in various leadership capacities during her 11 years on the Board of Trustees.

The Organizational Meeting was preceded by a virtual liturgy celebrated by Monsignor Joseph Shiels. The meeting also featured an opening prayer and remarks by DPCDSB alumni, His Excellency, Bishop Ivan Camilleri, a graduate of Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School. Bishop Camilleri is Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto, Western Region.

The meeting also featured the annual address to the Board of Trustees by the Director of Education, in which Director Marianne Mazzorato thanked educators, administrators and support staff for their incredible resiliency, dedication and commitment to ensuring DPCDSB students receive the best Catholic education we can provide. Director Mazzorato also spoke about how DPCDSB has strived to meet the goals of the Board of Trustees Multi-Year Strategic Plan despite working within difficult pandemic conditions and thanked trustees and for their ongoing support and leadership during this time.

"The hallmark of DPCDSB has always been a cohesive and collegial group of trustees who work hard, not only for their local constituents, but for all students and families across the system," said Marianne Mazzorato. "The current members of the Board of Trustees, whether they chair a committee or not, are individually and collectively heavily involved in their communities and as the voice of their constituents at the board table and I am pleased and proud to recognize and commend them."

In addition to the election of the Board chair and vice chair, trustees elected or acclaimed the chairs and vice chairs of various standing committees of the Board.

  • Administration and Finance Committee: Stefano Pascucci - Chair, Mario Pascucci - Vice Chair
  • Faith and Program Committee: Shawn Xaviour - Chair, Darryl D'Souza - Vice Chair
  • Board By-law/Policies Review Committee: Brea Corbet - Chair, Thomas Thomas - Vice Chair
  • Multi-Year Strategic Planning Committee: Bruno Iannicca - Chair, Luz del Rosario - Vice Chair

The Audit Committee is comprised of three trustee members and two external non-board members. Election of the chair and vice-chair occurs at the first audit committee meeting following the organizational meeting of the Board of Trustees, which will be February 1, 2022.  Current chair of Audit Committee is Anna da Silva, trustee, and the vice-chair is Darryl D'Souza, trustee.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board serves approximately 74,000 students in 151 schools located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville.
