NEW OSAP REMOVING FINANCIAL BARRIERS TO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY

If your child is currently in Grade 12, you should know that applications are now open for college and university programs. The last date for university applications is January 11th. College applications for the fall term should be submitted before February 1st. Your child may benefit from financial assistance for postsecondary education from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). As part of the most significant reform of student assistance in North America, the government of Ontario is removing the financial barriers to attending college or university. If your family income is under $50,000, your child’s tuition is covered. Even if you earn more, the new OSAP is still there to help with generous grants that will make sending your child to college or university more affordable.

  • most colleges have listed their cut off marks for oversubscribed programs and these are last year's marks
  • none of the colleges offer deferrals
  • colleges do not offer grade differentials except Conestoga
  • colleges do tell you if they use or rely on gr. 11 marks
  • none of the colleges can state that they give preferential treatment to SHSM students; this is due to MCTU policy; instead, they can say that these students often fare well in the program due to their background
  • many of the colleges have collaborative programs and articulation agreements
  • most colleges have posted workplace pathways

Something to consider:

  • they can do upgrading and prepatory courses: these classes are very good because they get "college training" and visits from people in the field; as well, when they apply to a regular college program, their application is viewed higher than a high school student
  • the rep from Durham also told us to direct our students to the corporate sector of the college; for example, at Durham, you can do forklift license with workplace credits
  • if you are 19, you have more options as a mature student

Noteworthy:

  • George Brown has a degree in Sign Language
  • Humber has an advanced diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • Durham has the only crane operator program (hoisting engineer) and these graduates, which include women, start at a six figure salary
