                                   (Who are we?)

Currently, our ICT SHSM and Communications Technology Program (known as MicTV – named after St. Michael and a play off the word “microphone”) consists of six separate classes: Grade 10, 11 and 12 Communications Technology, Grade 11 and 12 Photography, and Grade 11 Graphic Design, as well as a Grade 11 Film & Video course offered as a specialized Drama course in our school’s Arts Advantage program.

Grade 11 & 12 Communications Technology
Grade 11 & 12 Comm Tech build on the core curriculum of the Grade 10 course and continue to help
the learner grow in our curriculum.
Grade 11 Comm Tech, is a course with a similar unit structure as the Grade 10 course (with a smaller
amount of photography as compare to the grade 11 class), but all the assignments have been increased in difficulty, often have a “real-world” spin/client, and require students to often require multiple piece of hardware/software to complete their work. This course is for the student that found the Grade 10 course fun, worthwhile, or challenging. It forces students to take the “next step” in maturity when completing tasks in class and will create opportunities for the student to get involved with more Comm Tech related items around the school – whether it be broadcasting and joining the AV Crew OR helping with events around the school.

Grade 12 Comm Tech, is designed to a challenge to students to put all their Comm Tech skills they’ve learned in Grade 10 / 11 to create their own student short film. This course would be suggested to students interested in creating film works and other pre-production design that would be involved with developing your own film company and promoting the materials. Students are challenged to not only learn how to shoot scenes with the appropriate process and terminology, but use equipment that will take their work to the next level. Student work is showcased at student film festival SMFF (St. Michael Film Festival) every year.

Grade 11 & 12 Photography
Grade 11 & 12 Photography are new courses that have just been introduced within the last two years. Students enrolled in these classes will be challenged to learn how to shoot MANUAL mode with a DSLR camera to capture their images. They will have studio access, learn how to edit using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, they will use different lighting and equipment to capture their work, and try to establish an understanding of how to use natural light. Students in these classes are heavily encouraged to help with Yearbook photography during the semester and will have ample opportunity to use their position in these classes to be event photographers around the school.
The Grade 12 course is currently designed to use the Grade 11 course as a jumpstart into their final year as they consider applications to post-secondary programs and portfolio creation. Students are given ample opportunity to explore in independent or small group scenarios as they complete assignments designed to challenge their time management and work ethic.

Grade 11 Graphic Design
This is our newest program and Mr. Molle and Mr. Raposo are still working on developing the course which will be
offered in seconds semester. Students will be introduced to new softer that they have not visited in Grade 10. These programs include Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. They will be task with a variety of design challenges that hopefully we can also connect to “real world” experience within our own school community.
