This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills related to the various sectors of the tourism industry. Students will demonstrate advanced food preparation and presentation skills; increase health and wellness knowledge; develop tourism administration and management skills; design and implement a variety of events or activities; and investigate principles and procedures that contribute to high-quality customer service. Students will expand their awareness of health and safety issues, environmental and societal issues, and career opportunities in the tourism industry.

What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Hospitality and Tourism?
A SHSM in Hospitality and Tourism enables students to customize their high school experience to suit their interests and talents, to meet the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, and to prepare for a successful postsecondary transition to apprenticeship training, college, university, or employment in the hospitality and tourism sector. A SHSM enables students to gain sector-identified preparatory skills and knowledge and to make informed career decisions.
What are the components of a SHSM in Hospitality and Tourism?
The required 5 components identified in the ministry-approved framework are the following:
1. A package of 10 required credits, including 4 ”major” credits and required credits in English, mathematics, and science
2. Certifications recognized by the sector. (CPR, first aid, safe food handling, WHMIS, Service Excellence)
3. Experiential learning through cooperative education (a minimum of 2 credits), job shadowing, and work experience
4. Use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) to document demonstration of essential skills and work habits
5. “Reach ahead” experiences in the student’s post secondary destination of choice.
