Community Trip and Service Policy

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Community and leisure activities are an important component of the learning experiences of your adolescent here at St. Marcellinus Secondary School.  Furthermore, to become familiar and utilize community services and resources is relevant and necessary for students to be successfully transitioned into the community once their secondary program is complete.

As a result, community trips that include Heartland, Streetsville, Square One, and other local community centres and neighbourhoods target a number of essential skills that relate to individual programs.  These skills may include such things as street safety and walk safety, transit skills, and awareness of the community environment.  In addition, students may go grocery shopping, visit nearby malls and stores, take part in activities at the River Grove Community Centre, the Credit Valley Hospital, banks, nursery homes and other worthwhile locations.

Before any trip can occur, you will be asked to sign appropriate documents and to provide pertinent and essential information as outlined in each form.  Furthermore, you will be notified of dates and times once trips have been scheduled.

Please note that all major full day excursions outside of the larger community will require a special permission form and will therefore, be dealt with on a case by case basis.

For all excursions, the following guidelines will be followed to ensure student safety:

  • Students must have a wallet with ID,
  • Students must be dressed appropriately and have items suitable to weather and excursion (such as suntan lotion, hats, mitts, boots, etc),
  • Students must be in good health to participate,
  • Students must exhibit appropriate, compliant behaviour,
  • If weather conditions pose a safety issue for the group or for the individual in terms of wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, etc, than programming will be provided at school.
  • When the wind chill factor or temperature is a concern than a trip may be cancelled,
  • Student will be placed in flexible groups as appropriate and needed to ensure safety, programming, and resources.
  • Walking, bus transit, and school van are the priority form of transportation.

    Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.

    Sincerely,

    A. Di Francesco

    Academic Resource Department Head
