Co-operative Education

What is Co-operative Education?

Co-operative education provides secondary students with a wide range of learning opportunities connected to communities outside the school.  In co-operative education, students are actively involved in hands-on learning in local work placements to earn secondary school credits.  Students have the opportunity to determine what they learn, how they learn, when and where they learn, and how they demonstrate their learning.
A student’s co-op program consists of the cooperative education course, which is monitored by a cooperative education teacher, and the related curriculum course (that is, a course in any discipline, such as business studies, mathematics, technological education, etc). Every student in a co-op program must have a SCELP (Student Co-operative Education Learning Plan), which shows how the student’s related curriculum course is being applied at his or her co-op placement.
The cooperative education course consists of a classroom component and a placement component. The classroom component includes 15 to 20 hours of pre-placement instruction, which prepares students for the workplace and includes instruction in areas of key importance such as health and safety, work place rights, employment standards, etc.  During the placement, students will attend Integration days once a month to reflect on and reinforce their learning in the workplace.
Cooperative education allows students to participate in valuable learning experiences that help prepare them for the next stage of their lives, whether in apprenticeship training, college, community living, university, or the workplace.

How Does Cooperative Education Benefit Students?

Co-operative Education contributes substantially to a comprehensive education and career/life planning abilities by focusing on:

  • Helping students acquire skills and knowledge related to community experience.
  • Providing opportunities for students to inquire and reflect on their experiences in order to gain a greater knowledge of themselves and their opportunities and a growing understanding of how they can shape their future.
  • Providing personalized experiences to meet students’ particular learning and motivational needs.

Co-Operative Education experiences include:

  • A Student Co-operative Education Learning Plan (SCELP) based on course curriculum expectations.
  • Credit delivery (2, 3 or 4 credits in a semester)
  • Pre-placement instruction and orientation
  • Provision for Workplace Safety Insurance Board coverage
  • Regular monitoring at the Co-op placement by the co-operative education teacher
  • Integration of classroom and workplace learning
  • Student assessment
