Léger Literati Book Club

LEGER LITERATI BOOK CLUB: Lego a libri nobis!

THE MOTTO:

The Léger Literati Book Club's motto is a simple Latin phrase: Lego a libri nobis! Meaning, come and read a book with us. This common book club motto was taken up by founding Literati members in 2006 because first, it's Latin and therefore sounds vintage-cool and second, because really, the club is a social, communal gathering. We read the same novels and therefore we have quite a bit to chat about (and to debate) at each get-together. Reading, when you're part of a club like ours, is really a far more social, than a solitary, experience.

THE LITERATI:

While our readership changes annually as students graduate and move on, our club has continued to maintain its membership of Literati Lancers. This is mainly because Literati members stay with the club throughout their time at Léger. In some years, our readership has surpassed our novel count. Most definitely our strong Lancer loyalty to the Literati is rooted, in large part, to the fact that, we really are a community of readers.

THE NOVELS:

Literati read books nominated for the White Pine Award™, Young Adult Literature selected by the Ontario Library Associated (OLA), which are part of the Forest of Reading® program. This means that not only are several other Dufferin-Peel secondary students reading the same novels as our Literati, so are a great many of the secondary students in the province. In Fact, the OLA estimates that the number of Ontario students participating in the program is well over 250,000 annually. It is, in fact, Canada's largest reading club!

Students who read at least 5 of the 10 novels will be able to cast their vote and have a say in which novel wins the 2017 White Pine Award. With enough interest, we hope to attend the Festival of Trees™ held in Toronto at the Harbourfront Centre in May 2017.

THE AUTHORS:

As all the OLA reading program selections are always Canadian titles, often these authors live in and around our own community. This has made it possible to have had several White Pine nominated authors pay our book club a visit over the years. Natale Ghent, Eric Walters, Dan Aker and Heather Waldorf have all joined our book club meetings to speak about their writing processes and their journey in the world of professional writing. We certainly hope to have one of this year's "White Pine" nominees visit Léger soon. Stay tuned to this site for possible guest author developments!

AN INVITATION:

All Lancers are certainly welcome to pop into the library and sign up to the Léger Literati book club. Simply heed the morning announcements, refer to the school's website or  on Twitter for meeting details. We would love to have you join us: lego a libri nobis!
