Healthy Schools Initiative SJB's Breakfast Program!
2019-2020
As part of our "Healthy Schools Initiative", St. Jean Brebeuf is pleased to offer our Breakfast Program.
The Breakfast Program runs from 9:00-9:20 a.m. from Monday to Friday on days when school is in session. At this time, the program is open to all students. A variety of foods will be served during the week such as yogurt, fresh fruit, dried cereal, cheese, etc. No nut products will be served; however, if your child is participating and has food allergies, we ask that you please note them on the form available at the office. The goal of the program is to support learning and healthy development. It is well documented that students coming to school hungry do not perform well in the classroom, have difficulty concentrating, display behavioural problems, are less alert and are often lethargic. School principals and teachers have reported significant improvements in academic performance, social relationships and student behaviour when a Student Nutrition Program is offered.
FUNDING
Please be advised that the program is free to the children. Funding for the program comes from monies raised throughout the school year, by events such as Dance-athons and other school fund-raisers. As well, we are registered with the Ontario Student Nutrition Services (OSNS) through the YMCA of Greater Toronto Student Nutrition Program, Peel Program ( visit https://ymcagta.org/child-care/family-support-programs ). The OSNS organization provides Nutrition Program Support and works with St. Jean Brebeuf as community partners to provide and develop nutritious products and resources to support our Breakfast Program. The OSNS purchases food in bulk from vendors at wholesale pricing. For more information visit the OSNS at http://www.feedingkids.ca/ For more information on how the Ontario government is involved visit Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services at http://www.children.gov.on.ca >For Professionals>Student Nutrition and follow the links.
DONATIONS
Donations are welcome! If you would like to donate to our Breakfast Program, please contact our school office or send it into school with your child's permission form.
FOOD SAFETY
All of the food sources are documented throughout the supply chain. Perishable products are properly refrigerated from procurement to delivery and are then refrigerated and stored at St. Jean Brebeuf. Fruit is washed and prepared following Region of Peel safety guidelines and teachers were trained in menu planning, safe food handling practices and nutrition guidelines. All other items are pre-wrapped in packaging from the manufacturer.
MENU*
All single servings comply with Canada's Nutrition Guide. Students are encouraged to start with one item and select from a different food group if they are still hungry. For specific ingredients and information on the companies, please check the provided websites. Not all food products listed are offered at one time; instead, students are presented with a variety that changes throughout the school year.
