Snuggle up Take home book bag (will be coming home again shortly following assessment.)
Each night your child will bring home a book that they have selected at their reading level. Please monitor this program by reading with them, discussing the book and recording the books in their reading log. The books are to be returned and exchanged every day. I will be checking reading logs on Fridays to monitor progress.
In Grade 1, we discuss what good readers do. Our first strategy that we are focussing on is Lips the Fish. This strategy is about saying the first sound of the word to prepare for decoding. Our second strategy is Eagle Eye. This strategy reminds readers to look at the pictures for clues to what the words might say. Our third strategy is Stretchy Snake. He reminds us to sound out each letter sound and then say it fast. Our fourth strategy is Flippy Dolphin. This strategy reminds us that vowels have two sound when we are using Stretchy Snake. Our fifth strategy is called Chunky Monkey and he looks for chunks (groups of letters that make a certain sound e.g. ing, and, ch, etc.) when sounding out words. Please practice these strategies at home. More strategies will be added every week or so.
Homework Book and Riddle Me This
Two homework programs are coming home on the weekends. The Homework Book focusses on learning to spell the dolch words and writing neatly complete with capitals and periods. If your child is having difficulty with some of the dolch words, it is recommended that you practice that word further at home. We also work on these skills in class. The Riddle Me This program focusses on letters sounds, deductive reasoning and presentation skills. Both books are expected back on Mondays.
We are talking about solving problems with addition and subtraction. The students will learn how to attack a problem and what words to look for as well as some strategies on how to solve adding and subtracting situations. We are also discussing the equal sign and what it means in a number sentence.
Our third Family Life theme is Created Sexual. This unit will begin after Easter. If you would like to look at the Fully Alive textbook before we start, please let me know and I will send it home.
The virtue of the month is Kindness. A person of kindness...
- says nice things about others
- watches and looks for ways to help those in need
- sticks up for people who are picked on
Our third Religion unit is Lent and Easter.
How we organize ourselves
Central Idea: Communities are made up of structures that provide for people's needs.
We are beginning this unit of inquiry by wondering what objects are made out of and what shapes are used. We had Scientists in the School come and talk to us about stable structures. We will take a community walk and look for different structures in our community and what they do for us. We will also talk about people's roles who work there.
