NOTICE
RE: THE SHARING (USE) OF STUDENT’S PERSONAL INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION’S HOMEWORK HELP PILOT PROJECT
The collection, use, disclosure and retention of student’s personal information is permissible as long as it complies with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) and reasonable notice is provided to all parent(s)/guardian(s)/student(s). The sharing of the OEN numbers of students in grades 7 to 10 between Dufferin-Peel and the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) who operates the Homework Help website on behalf of the Ministry of Education is to facilitate with the student registration process. The use and sharing of the OEN will allow the Ministry of Education to track and assess student activity on the Homework Help site and determine the impact of the project on student success.
Therefore, this notice is being given to notify parent(s)/guardian(s)/student(s) of the sharing of personal information for participation in the Homework Help Pilot Project. The student information being shared with the ILC will consist of the following:
- OEN
- Date of birth
- Grade
- Course (secondary students only)
The Homework Help Pilot Project: Independent Learning Centre’s Homework Help Site:
The 2011-2012 academic year represents Dufferin-Peel’s third successful year of participation within the project. Based upon the success of the project, the Ministry of Education has now expanded Homework Help to all English speaking boards across the province of Ontario. Now over 600, 000 students in grades 7 to 10 will have access to this online math support site.
The ILC operates Homework Help which is a website that provides students with access to a variety of math resources including free and confidential online tutoring from Ontario teachers Sunday to Thursday evenings from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. To utilize this resource, students must register for the site (http://homeworkhelp.ilc.org/) by completing the registration process which involves:
- Creation of a anonymous username.
- Creation of a unique password.
- Providing a valid email address.
- Selecting “students” as user type.
- Entering their date of birth.
- Entering their OEN number.
- Confirming agreement with the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy
(* Please note that students who registered in the 2010-2011 academic year can access their existing account and are not required to re-register with their OEN.)
Homework Help launches for the 2011-2012 academic year on Sunday September 25th.
