Mission Statement

  • Focus on personal fitness & wellness activities in each course to help students learn self-care strategies and use physical activity as a positive coping strategy and have gratitude for the ability to move their body.

  • Romans 12:2 “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” – curriculum focussed health units and creatively designed lessons on freeing students from addictions and bad habits and “releasing the full you” – remembering inside each of our students is a blessed, prosperous, victorious person who is confident, secure, disciplined and focussed.

  • Create an inclusive and safe space in physical and health education classes. Elevate the qualities of nurturing, compassion and connection in order for students to feel as comfortable as possible by including rules for physical distance in game play, sanitizing equipment, and taking advantage of sport and physical activity having a unique opportunity to bring people together.

  • Using fair, equitable and transparent assessment practices, informed by our Christ-centred approach to professional judgement to create hope, engagement and growth for all to realize their full potential.

Faith

  • “You are not defective, you are not flawed. You have been fearfully and wonderfully made.” Students use their God given abilities to participate actively, develop skills and positive self image. “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength”, they will rise up high on wings like Riverhawks!

The PHE department presents SPORTS SHSM! If you want to gain incredible experience, and tools for your future read below then speak to your PHE teacher, or your guidance counselor, or visit the PHE office for more information.

SHSM Policy and Implementation Guide – Sports

The SHSM–Sports enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace. Where local circumstances allow, boards may elect to offer one or more variants of the SHSM in a given sector, each with a particular area of focus. This SHSM may be designed to have a particular focus – for example, on competitive and recreational sports, sports management, or sports media and broadcasting. This focus is achieved through the selection of the four major credits in the bundle.

The SHSM–Sports has the following five required components:

  1. A bundle of nine Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits

  2. Sector-recognized certifications and/or training courses/programs

  3. Experiential learning and career exploration activities

  4. Reach ahead experiences

  5. Sector-partnered experiences (SPEs)
